Strengthen connection, navigate change, and create new ways of being a family together.
Families are systems. When one person changes, grows, struggles, comes out, gets sober, enters or leaves a relationship, sets a new boundary, or moves into a different stage of life, the entire family system can feel the shift.
Family therapy at QST creates space to understand those shifts together.
We work with families who want to communicate more openly, understand one another more deeply, navigate conflict or transition, repair relationships, and develop ways of relating that make room for the people everyone is becoming.
We define family broadly.
Family therapy might include:
Family can be biological, chosen, created, complicated or some combination of all of the above.
Identity develops within relationships, and family relationships can play a powerful role in how safe someone feels becoming more fully themselves.
Our therapists work with families navigating coming out, gender and sexuality exploration, transition, changing names or pronouns, evolving family roles, and differences in understanding or acceptance.
We create space for honest conversations, questions, learning, repair, and growth while keeping the dignity and autonomy of LGBTQIA+ family members at the center of the work.
We also understand the importance of chosen family within queer communities. The people who support us, care for us, celebrate us, and show up consistently can become family regardless of biology or legal relationship.
Substance use and recovery rarely affect only one person.
Families develop patterns around substance use, sometimes over many years: protecting, worrying, monitoring, rescuing, withdrawing, keeping secrets, managing crises, or trying to figure out how to help.
Recovery can change those patterns again.
Family therapy can help everyone understand how substance use has shaped the family system, rebuild trust and communication, establish healthier boundaries, and adjust to new roles as recovery develops.
We also welcome families navigating harm reduction, changing relationships with substances, and different definitions of what recovery can look like.
Family therapy can support families navigating:
Our therapists think systemically, which means we're interested in more than determining who is “right” or identifying one person as the problem.
We look at the patterns happening between family members: how people communicate, the roles they've learned to occupy, what happens when conflict arises, how the family's history continues to shape the present, and what each person may need from the others.
Together, we'll slow those patterns down and create opportunities for clearer communication, greater understanding, healthier boundaries, and different ways of responding to one another.
Our approach is queer- and trans-affirming, culturally responsive, trauma-informed, and grounded in curiosity about each person's experience within the larger family system.
Families evolve. Relationships change. People grow. Family therapy gives you a place to navigate those changes together and intentionally shape what being a family means moving forward.
Taking the first step looks different for everyone. Whether you’re ready to start therapy or just want to learn more about Queer Sober Therapy, we’d love to hear from you. Reach out and someone from our team will be in touch soon.
